From First Pour to More: The Ongoing chronicles of Crema

Intro & The Opportunity in Front of Us

Aside from dedicating my evenings to the drifter's project—my valiant effort to carve a niche in this universe while scratching that insatiable creative itch—my daylight hours are consumed by the joys and jitters of running my very own coffee shop, Crema. Now, I'm a full-time self-employed maverick, having bravely (or foolishly, time will tell) severed the golden handcuffs of a predictable salary. So here I stand, singing for my supper, in every sense imaginable. Welcome to the rollercoaster that is my life so far.

Crema coffee shop

The past year has felt like a leap from a metaphorical cliff, dubbed by friends as my "What on earth are you thinking?" moment. Armed with a heady mix of blind optimism and a seasoning of naivety, my comrade-in-arms and I are about to dive headfirst into the unforgiving world of business. Our grand plan? Not just to open another coffee shop, but to create a caffeine oasis at the forefront of a bustling co-working hair & beauty space known affectionately as Collective. Imagine a place where the heady aroma of espresso meets the dynamic buzz of creativity and style—a sort of intellectual and aesthetic ménage à trois under one roof. This isn’t a wild stab in the dark; it’s more of a calculated fling with fate, inspired by a successful precedent. Should we manage to replicate that initial triumph, we’ll embark on an adventure to scale this dream across more sites in tandem with Collective's growth, aiming for the stars or, at the very least, a decent profit margin.

So, as I navigate this journey, from the lofty dreams of my drifter’s project to the caffeinated chaos of Crema, I invite you to buckle up. It’s going to be a ride filled with ups, downs, and maybe the odd existential crisis. Because if we can't laugh at the impending possibility of a spectacular public failure, what can we do?

Before the opportunity

Before this chance emerged, I stood at a crossroads, my spirit wrestling with the monotony of the status quo and a deep yearning for a path less travelled. The hospitality industry, with its ephemeral highs and wild nights, was my realm, yet it barely scratched the surface of my true calling. Beneath the routine of serving trays and rehearsed customer smiles, a fervent passion for branding and marketing burned within me. This wasn’t just a hobby; it was an obsession that consumed my thoughts, from envisioning compelling logos to crafting taglines that resonate on a profound level.

The prospect of diving into this uncharted territory, armed with nothing but my convictions and a disregard for traditional qualifications, was exhilarating. I was ready to break free from the mould, to carve a niche where my creativity could thrive unfettered. And what better canvas than my own coffee shop? A venture that, while rooted in hospitality, promised a playground for my rules, my vision. Let's embark on this journey, shall we?

Taking Risks & Facing Failure vs. Job Security

Setting sail on this adventure was akin to tightrope walking between the cosy, familiar bank of "Been There, Done That" and the thrilling, albeit slightly terrifying, abyss of "What the Hell Am I Doing?" It's that intricate ballet of playing it safe versus betting the farm on a dream. It's about having the courage to take that leap, metaphorically speaking, into uncharted waters, driven by the hope of landing somewhere spectacular—or at the very least, somewhere with a great view.

One of the great balancing acts in life is to be cautious and daring at the same time.
Cautious enough to avoid stupid mistakes, prevent burnout, and maintain a margin of safety. Daring enough to bet on yourself, to do the things you would regret leaving undone, and to be willing to be uncomfortable in the short term so you can learn and grow in the long term.”
— James Clear

Denialism | Denied Opportunities and the Fear of Failure & Rejection

Perched on the edge of my personal Everest, I've come face-to-face with an entire freak show of inner goblins, with the king of the ghouls being none other than good ol' Denialism. This sneaky fiend tricks you into thinking that the same old, same old is like a comfortable pair of slippers: reliable, if a bit worn at the edges. For a good chunk of my life, I've been serenaded by this lullaby of complacency, a tune so catchy it made me overlook every chance to jump because I was shackled by the dynamic duo of doom: fear of flopping and the terror of getting the cold shoulder.

These fears weren't just casually photobombing my life's snapshots; they were hogging the limelight, steering my ship with the kind of zeal usually reserved for stage mums. The phantom of being given the boot haunted me from the soccer fields of AFC Bournemouth trials—where the very idea of calling back the coaches so they could watch me in a competitive game gave me the willies—to the parade of 'might-have-been' in the romance department, all because I was too chicken to step into the spotlight. Creative media University applications gathered dust, dreams got benched, all thanks to my arch-nemesis: the horror of being turned down.

But here's the kicker: I've clocked that my real bugbear isn't face-planting into failure. I can dust myself off from that. It's the cold, hard slam of rejection, the sound of doors slamming shut before I've even got my foot in the doorway, that turns me into a statue. It's like being frozen mid-high-five, leaving a breadcrumb trail of 'what might have been' in my rear-view.

Now, as I captain my own ship, these ponderings on denialism and the jitters aren't just me being nostalgic; they're the forge where my will is getting tempered. Choosing to chart this course wasn't a whim. It's my charge of the light brigade against the fortress of fears I've cobbled together over the years, a conscious decision to wrestle the ghost of rejection with the hope of not just surviving the bout but doing a victory lap.

The Reality Check: Expectations vs. The Harsh Reality

Diving into this business venture, I was armed with a head full of optimism and the belief that hard work was the golden ticket. I imagined a path where perseverance would naturally lead to success, dotted with both victories and lessons learned. Yet, confronting the reality of launching a business, built on dreams and resolve, was like facing an earthquake that shook my core.

The awakening was brutal, a tidal wave that crashed over me, toppling my expectations, and forcing me to face unforeseen challenges. Emotionally, mentally, and financially, I was stretched to my limits, each day presenting a new battle in an unexpected war. My sense of self and worth was under siege, caught in a relentless struggle with my ego that threatened to dismantle my very essence.

The early days of planning and building seemed straightforward, a deceptive ease that gave way to pure fuckery that would later unfold. The true challenge emerged as growth slowed to a crawl, unveiling the stark loneliness of the entrepreneurial journey. My once limitless world had narrowed to the confines of my business, trapping me in a solitude that felt inescapable.

This past year has tested me in ways I never anticipated, throwing me onto an emotional roller-coaster that demanded I face hard truths. Transitioning from expectations to reality has been unforgiving, yet it has revealed a resilience within me I hadn't recognized before. This journey is more than the tale of launching a business; it's a narrative of personal transformation, where each obstacle and triumph reshapes my understanding of pursuing a dream.

The harsh reality of not achieving early success was a tough pill to swallow. To keep trading, to keep moving forward, I learned quickly that assumption is the mother of all fuck ups. Early wins require either impactful marketing from the start or an ideal location that captures maximum visibility and accessibility, applicable to both online and physical stores.

But anything short of that means earning your success the hard way. And this journey has been precisely that—a battle of fine margins, winning customers one at a time, with little room for error or second chances, especially in a coffee market teeming with formidable competition. The mandate is clear: meet or exceed the standard, or step aside for the next hopeful schmuck.

Reflections Amidst the Tempest: Joy and Second Thoughts

Sailing the choppy seas of the business world, I've been thrown questions that dig deeper than your garden-variety chitchat – inquiries about joy and second-guessing. It's fascinating, isn't it? How these ponderings pop up more when you veer off the beaten track, as if every detour from the norm invites an in-depth review by society's jury.

Am I nursing any regrets about diving headfirst into this adventure? It's not a simple yes or no. I'm caught in a tug-of-war between steadfast belief and thoughtful mulling over the countless 'what could have been'. Regrets? Not in the sense of wishing I hadn't taken the plunge. Yet, I can't deny that an alternate game plan might have dodged some of the heavier punches. "Check back in three months," is my go-to quip, half in jest, fully aware of the ever-morphing business terrain.

Onto the happiness query. It's peculiar being asked, it’s rarely been asked in the past, almost as though stepping into uncharted territories comes with a mandatory happiness meter. My answer usually draws an unexpected parallel: " I'm as chipper as the Titanic's guest’s pre-iceberg, blissfully unaware we're all skating on thin ice." This isn't doom and gloom talking or a lack of trust in what we're building. It's more about recognizing the fine line we tread – understanding that while a catastrophe isn't lurking around the corner, our prep for the unknown could be on shakier ground than we'd like. Thin ice as such.

The vibe is very much "women and children first," should everything go pear-shaped, and guess what? I'm neither. So, there's no emergency exit for me. We're all in, with no backup plans or financial cushions in sight; it's a full-throttle dash towards our dreams, risking it all without a safety net.

The Trade-Off: Freedom vs. Security

In the eye of this tempest, a pivotal question beckons: Why choose to navigate such a treacherous path? What offerings have I laid at the altar of self-employment, and what treasures do I seek in return? The response, layered in its complexity, springs from a craving for a brand of freedom scarcely found in the corridors of conventional employment. This journey isn't an evasion of work but a redefinition of it, on terms that are uniquely mine. The dream? To orchestrate a life not as just another cog in the machine but as the mastermind behind the machinery.

My vision is to foster ventures that do more than just succeed—they make a meaningful mark. To build something as impactful as the drifter’s project, something that echoes through time. The elusive prize I pursue isn't the crown of authority but the liberation it bestows. The liberty to sync my days with the beat of my own drum, to chase whims with fervour, to wander the earth's corners unshackled by the formalities of leave applications. This quest isn't fuelled by a lust for wealth in its conventional guise. Yes, financial stability is a part of the equation—nobody yearns to see their world crumble without the means for mending. But it's more about amassing the resources to uplift those dear to me and seizing the freedom to uncover the wonders of our vast world.

Embracing this leap, I've traded the familiar discomforts of the 9-to-5 routine for a fresh set of trials. The Sunday evening dread and the mundane monotony of admin Mondays, under the watchful eye of the bureaucratic finance department, have given way to a perpetual unease over cash flow and the formidable onus of leadership. Every choice, every gamble, every setback rests heavily on our shoulders. It's an exchange of monumental scale—sacrificing security for autonomy, the known for the possible. Venturing from the role of employee to entrepreneur is a journey laden with uncertainty and trepidation. Yet, I march forward, fuelled by the conviction that the spoils, both tangible and ethereal, far surpass the sacrifices laid.

The Brutal Truth: Sacrifice and Resilience

"Stepping into business, I've essentially signed up for a masterclass in being pummelled by life's wet fish. It's like I'm in a boxing match where I forgot to duck—repeatedly. Each thump has been a lesson in how to take a hit with a smile, proving that my ability to get metaphorically sucker-punched and still crack a joke might just be my greatest asset."

The Reflection Mirror: Self-Worth and Identity

At the outset of this voyage, I saw myself as a conqueror. Envisioned as the personification of motivation, brimming with ideas, optimism, and an arsenal of solutions, I was ready to tackle the challenges of opening a new business head-on. This initial self-perception was charged with a sense of purpose and the unshakeable belief that I was embarking on a path of meaningful creation and success.

However, as the journey became more arduous, my perspective began to shift. The inevitable comparisons to others' successes started to cloud my vision. I noticed the vacations they enjoyed, the new cars they flaunted, and the glamorous events they attended, each observation a needle pricking at the balloon of my self-worth. Doubts crept in, whispering insidious questions about whether I was merely chasing a pipe dream, a decade too late. The vibrant, bustling coffee shop of my dreams sometimes felt like an echoing, empty space, a stark reminder of the harsh realities of entrepreneurial life.

This period of struggle forced me to confront a version of myself I hadn't anticipated. The fear of being trapped in a cycle of minimum wage work, serving coffee while my peers advanced in their lives, cast a shadow over my spirit. I grappled with feelings of worthlessness, questioning the validity of my dreams and the choices that led me here. It was as if the very essence of who I believed I was, and who I could be, was under siege. This wasn't just a business challenge; it was an existential battle for my sense of self and purpose.

People usually judge you based on where you are at currently, not what you could become eventually. Don’t let one comment stop you from trying. File it away or use it as fuel. Focus on getting better. Someone else’s analysis of your current position doesn’t tell you anything about your current potential.
— James Clear

The Comparison Conundrum: Unpacking the Urge

Why did I begin to measure my journey against others? In the thick of entrepreneurial challenges, I lost sight of the essence of what it means to embark on such a path—the inherent sacrifices and the relentless grind. My gaze shifted outward, fixating on the achievements and milestones of others, using them as a barometer for my own worth and progress. At 38, wrestling with the monumental risk of launching not just any business but a coffee shop, I felt out of sync with time, as though this venture was a leap made too late.

This comparison wasn't just about material envy; it was deeper, tied to a sense of achievement and belonging. My ego, that internal critic, took every opportunity to highlight the gap between where I was and where I perceived others to be. It whispered reminders of the possessions I lacked, the accomplishments I hadn't achieved, casting a shadow over the tangible and intangible value of my journey. This relentless comparison fed into a cycle of self-doubt and regret, obscuring the true reasons behind my entrepreneurial drive.

The stark truth is these comparisons to a glorified external world of fancy cars, extravagant weekends, and idyllic vacations were distractions from confronting my own fears and insecurities. They were the illusions I once chased, believing they constituted success. Now, faced with the raw reality of building something from nothing, the focus has shifted inward. The real challenge, and perhaps the most significant, is not just to create a thriving business but to do so in a way that aligns with my core values and aspirations, irrespective of societal benchmarks. This journey is a reminder to forge a path that resonates with personal definitions of success and fulfilment, rather than succumbing to the pressures of external comparison.

The Financial Tightrope: Navigating Economic Uncertainty

Kicking off this chapter, I'd like to lay it all out there: money, or rather the maddening scramble for it, has been the bane of my existence. A point arrived, a low unlike any other, when the financial juggling act of my business became a daily tightrope walk. Funds were desperately shuffled from one account to another, attempting to keep both my business and a property venture from sinking, all while my personal savings seemed to evaporate before my eyes. The economy, ever so ruthless and erratic, offered no quarter, its slow recovery a constant reminder of the challenges beyond my grasp.

The weight of financial stress was ever-present, casting a long shadow over every choice made and action taken. It felt as though I was perpetually on the cusp of stability, with the threat of bankruptcy breathing down my neck, just a few missteps away. The spectre of financial collapse loomed not as a distant threat but as an impending reality, ready to swallow my aspirations whole.

They say money doesn't grow on trees, and boy, did that hit home. In my more desperate moments, I half-hoped to stumble upon a secret stash or a miraculous windfall to ease the burden. Yet, reality had other plans, forcing me to face the precariousness of my finances head-on. The days of reliable pay checks and the financial security they implied were long gone, replaced by the adrenaline rush of chasing my dreams on the brink of a financial abyss.

I've learned the hard way that financial pressures are not just a series of numbers on a spreadsheet. They test your mettle, push your creative limits, and demand a resilience that's both cultivated and hard-won. Living with the day-to-day uncertainty, my emotions laid bare, I've gained a profound appreciation for the true cost of chasing a dream. It's a journey that demands not only a risk-taker's heart but also the grit to confront the fallout, financial or otherwise, with a mix of realism and unshakeable optimism.

The Personal Side: Dating While Entrepreneurial

Navigating the entrepreneurial rollercoaster, I found myself tossing my heart into the ring for an extra beating, because why not? Business woes aside, diving into the dating scene seemed like the next logical step in my journey of self-inflicted challenges.

At first, dating was the furthest thing from my mind. But as the possibility of a connection loomed, the stark realities of my life began to overshadow potential romantic endeavours. Concerns about affordability, time, and the perception of my financial instability became all too real. The anxiety of being overshadowed by someone more financially free and less constrained by the demands of a start-up was overwhelming. The idea of competing with someone able to whisk my interest away on a spontaneous getaway was daunting.

Dating quickly morphed from a quest for companionship to a glaring spotlight on my deepest insecurities. The quiet stretches in my coffee shop, which should have been filled with strategies for attracting customers, instead amplified my fears about my desirability as a partner. Could anyone look past the struggling coffee shop facade to see the ambition and resilience within? Or would they only see a 38-year-old barista, consumed by a dream that demanded every ounce of his being, including his chances at love?

This foray into the personal realm, against the backdrop of entrepreneurial uncertainty, challenged my sense of self-worth in unexpected ways. It confronted me with the fear of being seen as inadequate, a burden rather than a potential partner with dreams and the audacity to pursue them. At one point, I felt so vulnerable and insignificant that I considered abandoning my entrepreneurial path for the safety of a regular pay check and the comfort of predictability.

Despite the emotional turmoil, this personal journey served as a much-needed distraction from the chaos of business. It provided a glimpse of hope, a brief escape from the bleakness that enveloped my professional life and introduced a new dimension to my otherwise monotonous existence. Even though it later unfolded into its own chapter of heartache, I wouldn't erase it; it added another gripping tale to the epic saga of my life.

The irony wasn't lost on me: I needed a distraction from my distraction, highlighting just how narrow my world had become. With only work, home, and now this personal endeavour as my mainstays, the instability of two out of three pillars made it challenging to maintain composure. But that's a story for another chapter.

Then there was the unforgettable car debacle—a shining moment in my dating misadventures. Picture this: a woman on a dating app discovers I don't own a car. Her reaction? Laughter that echoed through the digital void, followed by the swift ghosting reserved for the most egregious of dating app sins. In her eyes, my lack of a four-wheeled companion wasn't just unusual; it was practically medieval. To her, a man without a car was like a knight without his steed, utterly inconceivable. She couldn't fathom how I managed to survive in the modern world without succumbing to the allure of automotive ownership. It was as if I'd told her I still used a carrier pigeon for text messaging. Her laughter, a mix of incredulity and pity, left me wondering if there was a secret club of car owners, sipping champagne and swiping left on us pedestrian plebeians.

Embracing the Reality: Humility, Sacrifice, and the Unlikely Joy of Wrestling Pensioners

The entrepreneurial journey is less a path and more a wild scramble, often finding me elbow-deep in the trenches of humility and financial gymnastics. At the ripe old age of 38, my financial status toggles between 'artistically broke' and 'inventively skint,' a constant nod to the sacrifices made on the altar of my dreams. The usual suspects of indulgence—holidays, spontaneous pub crawls, and even the luxury of not calculating the cost of a coffee—have now entered the realm of folklore in my life.

Living on a shoestring budget has turned into an art form, where every penny counts, and the thrill of financial survival becomes oddly exhilarating. It's a world where receiving a wedding invitation sparks a panic akin to being asked to donate a kidney—out of fear for my wallet rather than any physical pain. I've found myself plotting creative ways to dodge these financial grenades, considering tactics as bold as offending the bride just to avoid the expense. My go-to response to any social gathering has morphed into a laugh-lined "No can do, I'm skint," a phrase that dances on the line between jest and stark reality.

This financial tightrope has also led to some rather humbling confrontations in the daily battle for sustenance. The 'skank tank'—the affectionate nickname for the discount shelf at the local supermarket—has become my arena. Here, I've learned the delicate art of wrestling pensioners for first dibs on reduced items, a testament to my newfound frugality and perhaps a low-key Olympic sport I never knew I needed. These moments, while tinged with a sense of desperation, also shimmer with the absurd comedy of my situation. There's something profoundly human and oddly satisfying about securing a half-priced loaf of bread after a tense standoff with an octogenarian.

Reflecting on my previous life of financial abandon—like the small fortune squandered on takeaways—it's impossible not to chuckle at my past self. £10k on fast food over seven years is less a statistic and more a cautionary tale, a masterclass in financial folly. It's a stark reminder of the ease with which one can drift from their aspirations, lulled into complacency by the siren call of convenience and Netflix binges.

But here's the twist: being perpetually broke has not just been about tightening belts and learning the ancient art of supermarket sumo wrestling. It's been a profound journey of self-discovery, resilience-building, and understanding the true value of sacrifice. Being 'skint' has evolved from a mere financial status to a badge of honour—a symbol of my unwavering commitment to my dreams, no matter how many pensioners I have to politely outmanoeuvre at the skank tank.

This entrepreneurial path, paved with sacrifices and sprinkled with unexpected bouts of laughter (often at myself), has taught me the essence of resilience and the unyielding power of a dream. It's a reminder that sometimes, the journey towards our dreams requires us to embrace the absurd, find joy in the struggle, and maybe, just maybe, learn to enjoy the dance of humility with a side of discounted bread.

Embracing Uncertainty: The Resilience of an Entrepreneurial Spirit

The journey of entrepreneurship is overshadowed by the ever-present possibility of failure, a stark reminder of the risks entailed in pursuing a vision. Yet, my evolution as an entrepreneur has led me to a profound realization: the success or failure of my venture does not dictate my self-worth or identity. Life’s inherent unpredictability teaches us that both triumphs and setbacks are integral to our growth, weaving the intricate mosaic of our experiences.

It's not the relentless work or the exhaustive hours that pose the greatest challenge; rather, it's those moments filled with doubt, the stretches of silence from the business that echo louder than any applause, coupled with the mounting financial strain. These periods highlight the emotional and mental rigors of entrepreneurship, a testament to the resilience required to withstand this tumultuous journey.

I've found that it's of some help to think of one's moods and feelings about the world as being similar to weather.

Here are some obvious things about the weather: It’s real. You can't change it by wishing it away. If it's dark and rainy it really is dark and rainy, and you can't alter it. It might be dark and rainy for two weeks in a row.

But. It will be sunny one day.

In the same way that one has to accept the weather, so one has to accept how one feels about life sometimes. "Today's a crap day," is a perfectly realistic approach. It's all about finding a kind of mental umbrella. "Hey-ho, it's raining inside: it isn’t my fault and there's nothing I can do about it, but sit it out. But the sun may well come out tomorrow and when it does, I shall take full advantage.

Stephen Fry

In these times, I've found solace and inspiration in an analogy with the weather, beautifully articulated by Stephen Fry. Our emotional response to life’s vicissitudes mirrors the changing weather patterns. Just as the rain is inevitable, so too are the challenges we face. Embracing the 'dark and rainy' days as integral to our journey is a crucial step towards cultivating resilience.

This acceptance is not about surrender but about acknowledging the transitory nature of our trials. It’s about finding our 'mental umbrella'—a means to protect ourselves from the downpour, waiting patiently for the skies to clear. The difficult days are not a signal of defeat but opportunities for growth and learning.

The belief that brighter days await acts as a beacon of hope, fuelling the drive to persevere despite the uncertainties. This entrepreneurial path, fraught with potential pitfalls, is equally laden with chances for rejuvenation and triumph. The fear of failure is a reality, yet it's merely a chapter in a larger story—one where endurance, hope, and a positive outlook are the protagonists.

By adopting this mindset, I am learning to navigate the ebbs and flows of this journey with equilibrium and foresight. The spectre of failure, though never completely vanquished, no longer overshadows my entrepreneurial quest. Instead, it becomes a source of empowerment, a testament to the indomitable spirit within me, ever prepared to confront and surmount the hurdles that lie ahead.

Broadening Boundaries: Thriving Beyond Constraints

Amid the daily hustle, it's all too easy for life to contract, confined by the slender margins we allocate for leisure. This narrow existence, dominated by work, sporadic gym sessions on clear days, and a ceaseless drive to cut costs, can unwittingly lead to vulnerability. In a life propped up by a few key pillars—work, personal connections, physical fitness, and a hobby or two—our mental and emotional stability becomes precariously reliant on the stability of these supports.

The impact of any disturbance in these foundational areas is significant, rippling through our mental state. Challenges in a relationship or business are not mere bumps in the road; they feel like direct attacks on our very essence, threatening to unravel the fabric of our daily lives. So, what's the strategy for navigating this tightrope? The answer lies in diversifying our interests, adding richness to our lives to distribute stress more evenly. Exploring a new hobby, enrolling in evening classes, or simply making time for social gatherings can open new horizons, cushioning the impact of setbacks. I reminisce about the days spent playing football, a time when the world’s worries would disappear, leaving nothing but the game and the goal of staying unhurt.

Recently, clarifying Drifters' mission has reignited my passion for the brand, slicing through the clutter to focus on what's essential. This reflection has rekindled my initial vision for Drifters, fuelling my creativity anew. Now, with a refreshed sense of purpose, I'm recommitting to building the brand, empowered by a crystal-clear understanding of our ethos. This newfound clarity has been transformative, providing a pillar of strength I previously lacked during challenging times.

Consider evaluating your life's pillars:

  • Work

  • Personal Growth

  • Family

  • Friends

  • Romance

  • Learning

  • Passions

  • Escapism or Adventure

  • Active Lifestyle

In this balancing act, journaling has become a haven for me, a way to untangle my thoughts and confront the realities shaping my life. Through writing, I've dissected my fears, ambitions, and challenges, often uncovering the root causes of my unease. This practice of introspection has not only illuminated my inner landscape but has also been instrumental in setting goals and fostering a deeper appreciation for life's journey.

Journaling revealed how I addressed persistent issues. When faced with anger, I would delve into its origins, realizing that underlying my irritation was often a sense of powerlessness or a lack of actionable plans. Identifying and implementing solutions shifted my perspective, diminishing the magnitude of previously daunting problems. This process has been a lesson in regaining control, navigating life's storms with greater composure and clarity.

Loneliness emerges as a significant hurdle in this constrained existence. The fundamental need for human connection often falls by the wayside in our relentless pursuit, highlighting the importance of nurturing relationships beyond our professional lives. It’s about finding a balance, seeking moments of connection that remind us there's a world outside our immediate bubble.

In times of despair, I find solace in the wisdom of Marcus Aurelius: "Live your whole life unswayed by outside forces and with a wholly joyful heart.” While easier said than done, it serves as a reminder that giving in to negativity is futile. I draw strength from the Stoic belief that all experiences, whether positive or negative, are fleeting. "This too shall pass," becomes not just a mantra for endurance but a beacon of hope, affirming that clarity and strength await on the other side of adversity.

Ultimately, the journey is about resilience—expanding our horizons, embracing vulnerability, and finding strength amidst challenges, all while keeping our eyes on the broader landscape that stretches well beyond the confines of work and immediate concerns.

The Calculus of Commitment: Sunk Costs and Making It

Embarking on the entrepreneurial journey is like navigating a maze with blind optimism, where the spectre of sunk costs—time, energy, and money—haunts every decision. It's a high-stakes adventure where daily financial minutiae can dictate survival, challenging one's resolve and financial savvy. Yet, this path is chosen with a mix of passion, stubborn optimism, and a dash of madness, driven by the belief in a dream that transcends mere monetary gain. Entrepreneurs tread this blurry line between perseverance and folly, fuelled by the thrill of building something enduring from scratch, with no fallback plan—just a relentless commitment to their vision, spiced with a humorously stoic acceptance of the chaos and potential for a comedic career pivot if all else fails.

The hardest part of entrepreneurship is the uncertainty that all your sacrifice will be for nothing. That we give up everything now for nothing later. But then you remember the life you walked away from to pursue your dream and realize there’s no going back.

So you keep going.
— Alex Hormozi

Embracing the Chaos: The Romance of Risk

Diving into entrepreneurship is like deciding to marry the chaos in your head, promising to love and cherish your wildly impractical dreams in sickness and in health, for richer or for poorer—which, let's be honest, often feels like vowing to live in a state of perpetual poverty. It's a whirlwind romance with your own brand of craziness, a passionate fling with an idea so bold it makes your bank account weep. Picture yourself, standing at the altar of innovation, whispering sweet nothings to your business plan, while society's expectations sit in the back row, shaking their heads in disbelief. This isn't just a career choice; it's a love story with a plot so unpredictable, not even a seasoned soap opera writer could dream it up. Sure, the path to entrepreneurial bliss is littered with sacrifices and the occasional existential crisis, but who needs stability when you can have the exhilarating thrill of chasing a vision only you can see? It's a commitment to living on the edge, where the promise of personal fulfilment and the chance to say, "I did it my way" is worth more than a lifetime of "what ifs." So, here's to embracing your inner madness with a heart full of hope and a wallet that's seen better days—because, in the end, who wants a boring love story anyway?

Chasing the White Whale: The Power of Persistence and Praise

In the relentless pursuit of entrepreneurial success, patience often eludes me. Historically, I've been graced with the fortune of projects finding their stride relatively early, setting a precedent that's both a blessing and a curse. It's led to an expectation of swift victories, making the slower, more grinding phases feel like confinement. There are moments when the entrepreneurial journey feels less like an adventure and more like a self-imposed prison, where the urge to abandon ship becomes overwhelming.

Yet, it's precisely in these moments of doubt and despair that the universe has a way of throwing a lifeline. A customer's heartfelt compliment, a look of genuine appreciation, or a message of admiration for what you've created can dramatically shift the perspective. These instances are my "white whale" moments—rare and fleeting, yet profoundly impactful. They serve as poignant reminders of why I embarked on this journey in the first place. It's in these interactions that the feeling of entrapment dissipates, replaced by a renewed sense of purpose and a reminder that, despite the challenges, there is value in what I'm building.

The phenomenon isn't unique to the tangible products or services we offer; it extends to the very essence of our venture. When someone takes the time to acknowledge your effort, to celebrate your creation, it's a validation that goes beyond mere transactional success. It's a nod to the passion, the vision, and the sheer stubbornness that fuels this journey. These moments of recognition and encouragement are invaluable, acting as beacons of hope in the darker times, guiding us back to our path with a renewed vigour.

So, here's to the cheerleaders—the customers, the followers, the supporters who, often unknowingly, provide the motivation to keep going. Their words of encouragement are more than just pleasantries; they're lifelines that pull us back from the brink, reminding us of the impact we're capable of making. And to us, the dreamers and doers who dare to chase our white whales, let's take a moment to acknowledge our resilience. For every compliment received is not just a pat on the back but a testament to our perseverance, a reminder that we've made something that resonates, that matters.

In this journey, marked by highs and lows, it's these moments of unexpected praise that reaffirm our purpose, urging us to continue the chase, to stay the course, and to keep believing in the elusive yet attainable dream that drives us forward.

You Bastards! I nearly took the easy route out then!

Discipline & Consistency: Who's Mastered It?

People who can stick to plans are much rarer than the people who make them
— Alex Hormozi

Navigating the rocky terrain of entrepreneurship has spotlighted a glaring truth for me: the absence of discipline and consistency can derail the best of intentions. Reflecting on my journey, I've come to realize that these two attributes—or, more accurately, the lack thereof—have been at the heart of many hurdles and setbacks I've encountered.

Discipline, the steadfast dedication to our goals, and consistency, the unwavering commitment to pursue them day in and day out, are the silent warriors behind success. They're not just virtues but necessities for anyone looking to make their mark, especially in the unforgiving world of business.

For years, I grappled with the consequences of not fully embracing these qualities. The realization that discipline and consistency were missing pieces in my puzzle has been both enlightening and challenging. It's a discovery that has forced me to confront my habits, work ethic, and, ultimately, my approach to chasing my dreams.

The question now isn't just about who possesses discipline and consistency but about how we can cultivate these traits within ourselves. It's a journey of self-improvement, of turning our setbacks into comebacks, and transforming our aspirations into achievements through sheer will and perseverance.

Taking the Leap: Our Audacious Expansion Adventure

If you've been riding shotgun on this rollercoaster journey of mine, through the peaks of hope and valleys of despair, then buckle up for the next thrilling loop. Your loyalty is about to be rewarded with a plot twist that even I didn't see coming. In a world that seems to be tightening its belt, we've decided to not just stay in the race but to sprint ahead. That's right, we're betting the farm and expanding our operations. Picture this: opening a second location in the midst of a recession, right before the holiday spending freeze. Talk about impeccable timing, huh? Lol!

The stars have aligned to offer us a chance to set up shop 50 miles away in the bustling Portsmouth North End. This might sound like a leap straight into the deep end, but trust me, it's a calculated cannonball. This "double or quits" move isn't born from a wild gamble but from a deep-seated belief in what we're building—and the conviction that sometimes, to reach new heights, you need to take a giant leap.

This isn't just about spreading our physical footprint; it's a bold affirmation of our faith in our business and our readiness to put our money (what’s left) where our mouth is. It's about recognizing that the essence of entrepreneurship lies in grabbing opportunities by the horns as much as it's about weathering storms.

"Double or quits. Fuck it!" This might sound like we're throwing caution to the wind, but it's actually our battle cry. It encapsulates our readiness to commit fully to our dreams, to risk everything for the chance to create something extraordinary. This expansion is our dive into the unknown, propelled by the hard-earned wisdom and grit we've picked up along the way.

As we stand on the brink of this new adventure, it's with a cocktail of excitement and nerves. We're mindful of the risks but electrified by what lies ahead. Choosing to expand now is our way of shouting from the rooftops that we refuse to be paralyzed by fear. We haven't battled through storms to settle for the safety of the shore; we're here to sail into uncharted waters, to leave a legacy, and to show that sometimes, the most audacious moves lead to the most spectacular victories.

Crema: Crafting an Identity Amidst the Chaos

As we navigated the tumultuous waters of entrepreneurship, a defining moment emerged from the chaos: the birth of Crema's identity. Initially, I had a vision for Crema, our coffee shop—envisioning a fresh, inviting aesthetic distinct from the rugged, upcycled look common in the industry. I imagined a space with a cosmopolitan flair, perhaps echoing the laid-back sophistication of Australian or Balinese coffee culture. While the logo seemed fitting, capturing the essence of Crema's personality—its balance of masculinity and femininity, its appeal in a co-working environment intertwined with a hair and beauty space—remained elusive.

The breakthrough came with a simple, yet transformative phrase: "Ok, but first Crema." This riff on the well-known coffee aficionado's mantra, "But first, coffee," not only embedded our brand into a familiar saying but also perfectly encapsulated the ethos of our space. It became a versatile slogan, adaptable to the co-working context—"Before your treatment, first Crema." This catchphrase transcended mere branding, embodying the experience we aimed to offer and resonating with our diverse clientele.

This realization marked a turning point. Crema's identity crystalized into something vibrant and distinct—provocative, yet approachable, fun, yet sophisticated. It's as if Crema blew us a kiss with a cheeky wink, revealing its true colours. Suddenly, the path forward became clear. We didn't just have a coffee shop; we had a brand with a life of its own, a personality that could engage and enchant.

Reflecting further on the essence of navigating through the entrepreneurial landscape, it's crucial to acknowledge the pillars of personal well-being that underpin success. Amidst the chaos and the relentless pursuit of our dreams, the significance of nurturing our physical and mental health becomes paramount. Less alcohol, more sleep—a mantra for maintaining clarity and resilience. The discipline of regular exercise, the conscious choice of nourishing foods, all fuel the energy needed to tackle the challenges that lie ahead.

Beyond the physical, the journey demands a commitment to mental and emotional growth. Learning new skills, delving into the realms of knowledge that challenge and inspire, becomes a cornerstone of personal development. It's about focusing efforts on solving the problems that truly move the needle, making impactful decisions that propel us forward.

Journaling, reading, and meditation emerge as invaluable practices in this process, offering moments of introspection and tranquillity amidst the whirlwind of daily tasks. These practices, coupled with the simple, restorative act of going for walks, serve to calm the mind, providing a sanctuary from the pressures of entrepreneurship.

These activities are not mere distractions but essential components of a holistic approach to the entrepreneurial life. They remind us that, while the pursuit of our business goals is paramount, the journey is also about personal evolution—about becoming individuals capable of weathering the storms and embracing the triumphs with equal grace.

Incorporating these practices into our lives enriches our journey, ensuring that we remain grounded, focused, and ready to face whatever comes our way with a balanced mind and a strong body. It's a testament to the belief that success is not just measured by the milestones achieved but by the growth experienced along the way.

Don’t be afraid. You’re going to make it, but it’s always going to feel as if you’re not. That’s the fun, you see!
— Alan Watts

So, here I am, still a bit terrified, perpetually caffeinated, and somehow more excited than ever. The future of Crema? It's out there, somewhere between the next coffee roast and the next wild idea. And if there's one thing I know, it's that with a lot of hard work, a sprinkle of luck, and maybe a few more catchy slogans, we'll get there—wherever "there" is. Because, ok, but first Crema.
