So We made our own video, And Here's how we did it

There’s a couple of reasons for this post:

  1. To show you our new video we made showcasing some of our tees

  2. To talk about why we did it

  3. To share how we did it; a few of you have asked us who we paid to do it. We did it ourselves with very little budget…

No.1 the video

This point is easy, watch the video. Job done! Now move onto point number 2...

No.2 why we did it?

So we launched the site fully loaded with out products in early December – a real crazy time of year for us to launch considering we’re a tiny online boutique streetwear brand (we only had roughly 700 Instagram followers at the time). We realised that before the majority of people would buy their swag with us, we had to earn their trust first. This is where the idea for the first SCD video came from. Obviously you can’t feel the fibre of the fabrics or see how the product fits on yourself when shopping online. Any normal brand would create a ton of content for these reasons, so their customers are able to make informed decisions before their online purchases.

What did we do? I’ll give you one guess... NOTHING! Mental right. We froze a little amongst the chaos and booziness of the Christmas period. Lesson no.1 has been learnt: CONTENT! CONTENT! CONTENT! Especially, if the brand’s main channel to the consumers is through social and web.

So once the German beer coma wore off and we’d finished our New Year’s travels, we kicked our own asses and got in contact with a bunch of budding collaborators and did a deal: merch for content. Then, we decided the project couldn’t wait that long so we contacted a few friends, borrowed some kit and got down to the beach to create something.

Did we storyboard everything beforehand? To the frustration of the poor guys helping us out… no. There was an idea, and a few IG/Pinterest shots used for inspiration, but nothing concrete. Moving forward, I would highly recommend ensuring to scope the location out and create a storyboard prior to the shoot. We got insanely lucky with the location and weather, but in hindsight we could have created so many more great shots if we did storyboard beforehand. But, you live and you learn…

The point we’re trying to make here is that, if you’re worried about the issues and costs of creating content, all it cost us was the price of lunch that day for the help of some willing people. Admittedly, the generosity of one of the guys helped with the costs as he lent us the equipment needed, to save us having to go out and buy it ourselves. But here’s the thing about the hustle…

  1. There’s tons of equipment out there to be borrowed, if you’re willing to ask. You don’t ask, don’t get.

  2. Most people who have drones don’t use them nearly as much as they want to. Give them half a chance to play with their underused expensive toy and they’ll jump at the chance (largely to prove to their partner it wasn’t a waste of money)!

No.3 how we did it

So what did we use, you ask?

Equipment list:

  • iPhone 11 Pro - we used this for the shots on the gimbal

  • DJI Osmo Mobile 3 Gimbal (stabiliser) – this thing is ace!

  • DJI Mavic Pro 2 (Drone) – this too…

  • Canon EOS 60D – for still shots

  • iMovie (don’t judge.. it still did the job)

  • Skateboard + Beryl Bike

  • 1 x Actor who can skate

  • 1 x Actress who loves to smile

  • Music = www.soundstripe.com

In short, lunch came to around £40 and we filmed for approximately 2 and a half hours all in. Editing came to about 18 hours with sorting images and timeline, plus several edits.

We’re no experts, but we’re super stoked with the outcome seeing as seemed to make most of it up on the spot.

Next time

We’ll definitely scope out the location beforehand, storyboard the video and identify some cool shots to capture. Oh also, pick your music first so that it gives you an idea of what tempo your video is going for. If you’re looking for inspiration for some hacks to get great shots, below is a dude we follow called Jordi Koalitic.

There’s obviously a whole rabbit hole of inspiration on YouTube, so it’s worth falling down that for a few hours to get psyched for your shoot…

Right that’s it, from a bunch of rogue amateur drifters, we hope this helps for anyone looking to start their own brand or simply just create some content.

Peace out from team SCD xXx ✌️
